Happy holiday weekend, intrepid cook!

Because Memorial Day launches the summer season, I’ve got salad on the brain. And because I’m in the process of putting together a Cooks Without Borders French cookbook, I’ve been compiling all the French and French-ish recipes I’ve ever developed. That led me to pull off the shelf a copy of my first book — The Art of the Cocktail Party. Published in 1994, it’s all about how to throw a cocktail party, including recipes for cocktails and hors d’oeuvres.

You probably won’t be surprised if I tell you there are a few embarrassments in its pages, written so long ago. But I have to say, I’m a bit surprised that many of the recipes still sound appealing to me, and most are not too dated.

My favorite part of the book has always been the illustrations — created by none other than Juliet Jacobson, my partner at Cooks Without Borders and the site’s designer.
