According to an article in Texas Monthly published back in 1974, the Margarita was invented in Juarez, Mexico in 1942 by a bartender named Pancho Morales, and popularized in the 1950s in Los Angeles, California, at a long-running Restaurant Row (La Cienega Blvd.) establishment, Tail O’ the Cock.

I love my Margaritas on the bright side; if you like them sweeter, use a little less lime juice and a little more orange liqueur.

Makes 1 Margarita; batch instructions follow the recipe.

Ingredients

  • Salt for rimming the glass

  • 2 ounces tequila (blanco or silver are fine)

  • 3/4 ounce Combier, Grand Marnier, Cointreau or other orange liqueur

  • 3/4 ounce freshly squeezed lime juice (about 1 medium-sized, medium-juicy lime)

Instructions

  1. Spread salt on a small plate, rub the rim of a rocks glass with the cut side of a lime, then dip the rim into the salt. Fill the glass with ice and set aside.
